Old School

That's Athens Bicycle Mountain Bike Team member Joey Boyle getting some air at the West Virginia State Championship race in Davis, W.V., on Sunday. Everyone kept saying the race would be old school, and they were right. With a parade-style prologue that reminded me of the earliest 24-hour races in Canaan, legendary trails (Moon Rocks, for example), severe conditions (wet and muddy to the max) and brutal terrain, it was old school all the way. Many a brake pad was scraped down to nothing on this race course, not to mention the minds, bodies and souls of many of the racers. Fortunately, super-friendly spectators were there to encourage everyone to keep on slogging it out.
